His main research and application focus is on water pollution control, wastewater recycling technologies, and their mechanisms—specifically covering biological treatment technologies for wastewater, sludge, VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and malodorous substances. He has won 1 National Science and Technology Progress Award and 4 ministerial-provincial level Science and Technology Progress Awards.

His research directions include wastewater treatment in small towns, urban sewage pipe networks, and comprehensive improvement of urban water environments. He has won more than 10 provincial-ministerial (including industrial) awards in science, technology and education.

She has won the National Excellent Design Silver Award, Luban Award, First Prize and Second Prize of Excellent Design of the Ministry of Construction, as well as First Prize and Third Prize of Excellent Design of Beijing Municipality. She serves as a consulting editorial board member for "China Water & Wastewater" and "Water Supply & Drainage" , and a member of the "Municipal Public Utilities Expert Committee" and "Sustainable Development and Resource & Environment Expert Committee" of the Ministry of Construction. Additionally, she holds positions as a senior expert member of the "Water Treatment Committee of the Environmental Protection Industry Association under the Ministry of Environmental Protection" (now the Ministry of Ecology and Environment), an expert of the "National Investment Project Appraisal Center of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC)", and a member of the "Expert Committee for the Demonstration of National Water Special Projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology". In 1996, she was awarded the title of "National Expert with Outstanding Contributions in Science, Technology and Management" and has been enjoying the Special Government Allowance of the State Council ever since.

As the first author (or corresponding author), he/she has published more than 100 papers in SCI-indexed journals. He has also contributed one chapter each to English monographs published by Elsevier and Springer respectively. Additionally, he/she has obtained 19 authorized invention patents (including 3 U.S. patents). As the first completed person, he/she has won 1 First Prize of the Yunnan Provincial Natural Science Award and 1 First Prize of the Yunnan Provincial Technology Invention Award.
