Amid the global wave of green development, the environmental transformation of the leather industry has drawn much attention. Lingzhi Equipment Co., LTD. (formerly Jiangsu Lingzhi Environmental Protection Co., LTD., hereinafter referred to as "Lingzhi Equipment") has deeply participated in the ecological reshaping of the leather industry in Dhaka, Bangladesh, with an international perspective and cutting-edge technology. The Common Tannery Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP, centralized tannery wastewater treatment plant) project it undertook has become a benchmark example for Chinese environmental protection equipment enterprises to contribute to the green development of the "Belt and Road Initiative".


I. Project Origin: Solving the Environmental Protection Dilemma of the Leather Industry in Bangladesh
The leather industry in Bangladesh is one of the economic pillars. The Dhaka leather industrial park is home to a large number of enterprises. However, under the traditional production mode, wastewater pollution seriously threatens the ecology and the survival of the industry. On March 11, 2012, Lingzhi Equipment Co., LTD. (formerly Jiangsu Lingzhi Environmental Protection Co., LTD., hereinafter referred to as "Lingzhi Equipment") joined hands with Bangladesh Development & Construction Co., LTD. (DCL) as a consortium (JLEPCL-DCL JV) to sign a contract with the Ministry of Small and Household Handicrafts of Bangladesh (BSCIC). The CETP project has been officially launched, covering the entire wastewater treatment process system - from collection and transportation, chromium recovery, to solid waste disposal and laboratory construction, laying a solid foundation for the green transformation of the industry.
Ii. Technological Breakthroughs: Building a Full-chain environmental protection treatment system
(1) Breakthroughs in core processes
The project is planned to treat 200,000 cubic meters of tanning wastewater per day and will be advanced in four major modules. By adopting a synergistic process of physical, chemical and biological methods, the challenges of degrading heavy metals, dyes and harmful organic substances are overcome. The chromium recovery system (CCRU) precisely intercepts and purifies chromium resources, turning pollutants from waste to treasure. Solid waste landfills and leachate treatment facilities cut off the solid waste pollution chain. The central laboratory is equipped with advanced testing equipment, providing data support for water quality monitoring and process optimization.
(II) Construction and Operation Records
In 2014, the project team started construction in full swing after receiving the construction layout plan. In August 2016, the first two groups of CETP modules were put into operation first. In September 2017, the remaining two groups of modules were initiated. By June 2021, after more than four years of trial operation and optimization, the seven-person supervisory committee led by the chairperson of BSCIC verified that the treated water quality was stably up to the ECR-97 standard. Although it did not fully reach the design optimal value due to force majeure factors, the overall commissioning and stabilization results were recognized by authorities, clearing the way for the industry's compliant production.


Iii. Ecological and Economic Win-win: Data Witnesses Green Transformation
Before the project was put into operation, the tannery wastewater was directly discharged, causing black and odorous water bodies and ecological imbalance in the surrounding areas. After its operation, the pollution control has achieved remarkable results. Data for July 2025 shows that Bangladesh's leather and leather products exports soared by 29.65% year-on-year to 127 million US dollars - leather footwear (+25.52%, 79.82 million US dollars), leather products (+41.54%, 38.33 million US dollars), and raw hides (+21.9%, 9.24 million US dollars) all saw growth. Behind this, the CETP project has played a significant role: it not only helped enterprises avoid environmental protection fines but also enhanced the international competitiveness of their products, enabling the leather industry in Bangladesh to gain a firm foothold in the face of the "green barrier" and achieve a double leap in ecological and economic benefits.
Iv. Industry Implications: The Global Value of China's Environmental Protection Solutions
From project signing to stable operation, Lingzhi Equipment has spent nearly a decade demonstrating the technological strength of Chinese environmental protection equipment enterprises to the world. This project is not only a sewage treatment project, but also an innovative practice of "green infrastructure + industrial empowerment" - through full-process environmental protection control, it reshapes the development logic of traditional highly polluting industries.
Today, the wastewater treatment plant in the Dakar Leather industrial Park has become a local environmental protection calling card.
